Addiction can be in a form of psychological or physical addiction. In psychological addiction, one can become addicted to activities such as gambling or sex. While in physical addiction, one can become dependent on chemical substances such as drugs or alcohol. Medical specialists who handle these types of problems are referred to as addiction psychiatrists.

Definition

Addiction psychiatrists are psychiatrist medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patients with all sorts of addiction from psychological to physical. Addiction psychiatrists may teat these patients with medications, behavioral, and psychotherapy, counseling, and other rehabilitative treatments.

Some people develop addiction as a result of traumatic experiences while others may also have mental disorders. In some cases, it may also be caused by genetic factors. They may not function normally as expected of them if they are not able to do the things that they are compelled to do or if they are not able to take substances that they are addicted to. These individuals need help and addiction psychiatrists are well trained to handle these types of patients.

For one to become an addiction psychiatrist, one should complete a 4-year bachelor's degree in college. After that, one has to proceed to medical school which takes another 4 years of study. Other than that, one needs to undergo a residency training of another 4 years plus an additional 2 years to specialize further in addiction psychiatry. In order to practice the profession, one also needs to pass all state board exams to get a medical license.
