The fields of medicine have been created based on different categories like the age, sex, and organ system. As for the gender of patients being catered, there is the andrology that takes care of the male reproductive system. On the other hand, the branch of medical science that deals with the female reproductive system is known to be as gynecology.
Gynecologists are medical doctors who specialize in providing health care to women's reproductive system. Of course, these medical professionals also take care of the organs that belong to the reproductive system like the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, and vagina. These specialists promote health by diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders that affect the female reproductive system.
Medical doctors who specialized in the field of gynecology are very much proficient when it comes to evaluating, detecting, and taking care of diseases that attack the organs of the reproductive system. Furthermore, they also have the right knowledge and skills in performing surgical interventions such as hysterectomy (a surgical procedure to remove the uterus).
Types of Patients
Basically, gynecologists deal with female patients that have problems with their reproductive tract. Of course, there are just too many conditions that influence the reproductive organs. Among these problems are: prolapse of some pelvic organs, menorrhagia (a term used to describe heavy menstrual flow), dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), and infection of the uterus, cervix, or vagina that can be caused by different microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, virus, and protozoa.
Gynecologists can also diagnose and provide management for more serious conditions like pre-cancerous conditions or cancer. They can deal with malignancies that occur on various reproductive organs like the ovary, fallopian tube, uterus, and cervix.
The care provided by gynecologists can extend beyond another branch of medicine. Females can also experience urinary continence and gynecologists occasionally manage this problem. However, these medical experts would sometimes refer patients going through this problem to a competent urologist
(a medical specialist that deals with problems of the urinary tract).
