Otolaryngologist

In the US, a lot of medical specialties are already known today but the oldest of these appears to be otolaryngology. This branch of medical science is concerned mainly with the problems of the ears, nose, and throat. Hence, if a person feels that there is something wrong in these parts of the body then he or she must seek a consult with an otolaryngologist.

Definition

An otolaryngologist is a medical specialist who is responsible for diagnosing, managing, and treating the diseases and disorders of the ears, nose, and throat. They deal with the other areas of the head and the neck as well. The treatment that is performed by these professionals involves both medical and surgical interventions.

Types of Patients

Otolaryngologists are known for their expertise in diagnosing and treating diseases that aim at the sinuses, larynx or voice box, mouth, throat, and structures found along the neck and on the face. These medical specialists can provide primary care for the ears, nose, and throat problems in both the young and the old patients.

Based on the figures, one in every ten people living in North America is affected with hearing loss. And since otolaryngologists take care of the ears of patient then it is part of their job to manage this hearing problem. Other ear conditions that are medically and surgically treated by these medical experts are ear infections, tinnitus, balance disorders, and disorders of the inner and outer ear.

Otolaryngologists are also responsible for the care of the nose and the sinuses. As a matter of fact, it is their job to manage allergies as well as inflammations like chronic sinusitis.

Throat is another area of the body that otolaryngologists care for and they are trained in finding the solutions for the conditions affecting speech and swallowing. The expertise of these medical professionals lies on the diseases influencing the larynx and the upper gastrointestinal tract or simply the esophagus.

Finally, medical doctors who specialize in managing head and neck conditions can provide treatment for tumors (malignant and benign), infectious disease, deformities, and trauma in these two specific parts of the body. Part of their work, in order to deal with the problems in these two areas, is to conduct reconstructive surgeries if ever there is a need to.

Workplace

There are different workplaces where otolaryngologists can practice their chosen profession. Some of these medical professional open their own clinics or offices for the purpose of practicing privately. There are those, however, who are hired and work in a hospital or clinical setting.
