Definition

Radiologists are medical doctors who have undergone intensive training in operating imaging apparatuses and interpreting results from these machines. Simply speaking, radiologists can be considered as imaging specialists since their line of work is associated mostly on medical images.

The images that they analyze come from different kinds of machines like X-rays, radiographs, CT (computed tomography) scan, and fluoroscope. Other forms of machines that they utilize are ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging or MRI.

The role of radiologist is very important because the treatment plan for the patients would be based on the findings on the medical images and other diagnostic exams. In addition, other attending physicians seek for their advice because their knowledge is also significant to the entire course of disease management.

Types of Patients

Radiologists do not only analyze image results as they also perform treatment. There are forms of diseases that can be treated using radiation and it is the radiologist who executes this type of treatment. On the other hand, there are conditions in which image-guided surgery is required and it is also the responsibility of a radiologist to complete such procedure.
